Los Altos High School Design Project

Setting and logistics

This project was taught remotely to 20 high school students over the course of three 1-hour sessions in October 2020.

Project goal

To expose Los Altos High Schools’ National Art Honor Society students to (1) what design is, (2) how to approach design projects, (3) what a design project looks like, and (4) how to use the digital design tool, Figma.

My role

I’ve always had a passion for giving back to the design community, and am especially interested in making design more accessible to people of all socioeconomic backgrounds. That is why I reached out to the head art teacher of Los Altos High School to create and teach her National Honor Art Society students what design is and have them go through a design project.

Project feedback

Courtney was a great teacher, who went into depth about graphic design and what clients look for in a design or a logo. Very helpful and highly informative class.

I loved learning about designing process and how designers make decisions. I also loved researching about the different designers and seeing the diversity in their designs.

I liked how much freedom we got to test every single idea we had. Also, because it wasn't graded, I was able to focus on the more fun parts of the design process, which resulted in an experience that was more valuable to me.
